Chiangmai

Lying in a broad, fertile valley on the Ping River, surrounded by mountains and inhabited by a people whose friendliness is legendary, the city and its surroundings enchants both visitors from home and abroad. Chiang Mai was once flatteringly described as "The Rose of the North"
Although you will find mushrooming skyscrapers and major roads, there is none of the indiscriminate construction which mars other Thai cities.

The old town is laid out in the form of a square with each side about 2km (1 1/2 miles) long and surrounded by a moat. In some places the fortifications have been preserved or reconstructed. Pretty wooden villas are tucked away in flower-filled gardens, ancient temples stand at the end of winding alleys, and restaurants and souvenir shops line the streets.

Despite the constant bustle, the city still gives the impression of being an overgrown village. Although the hotels and restaurants do not match the standards of Bangkok or Phuket, they are cheaper. Architecture and decor often display refreshing Northern Thailand accents.
Chiang Mai is one of the few places in Thailand where Thais and foreigners seek entertainment in the same establishments and shop at the same markets.
