About Thailand
Area
About twice as large as the United Kingdom, Thailand extends over 1,500km (938 miles) from north to south and 500 miles (800km) from east to west, covering an area of 513,115sq km (198,113sq miles).
The shape of its territory has sometimes been compared to a elephant's head, with the southern part of the country, lying within the Malay Peninsula and representing the trunk, only a mere 13km (8 miles) wide at its narrowest point. Bordering Thailand in a clockwise direction from the north are Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and Burma (Myanmar).
The heart of the country centres on the delta of the Chao Phaya river, its fertile plains making a major contribution to the national rice production. The north is crossed by a succession of jungle-covered mountains which form part of the Himalayan foothill; the highest peak in the country, Doi Inthanon, soars to 2,595m (8,304ft). Framed by hills with peaks of between 700m (2,240ft) and 1,000m (3,200ft) high lies the upland plateau of Khorat, now largely bare as a result of intensive deforestation.
West Thailand consists of a densely forested mountain chain between 1,500m (4,800ft) and 6,400ft (2,000m) high.Running alongside the central region, the mountains mark the border with Burma before continuing into South Thailand. The countless inlets along the south coast fringe two seas: the Andaman, which merges into the south China Sea in the east.
Climate
Thailand has tropical climate characterized by three seasons. During the rainy season from May till October, the southwest monsoon sweeps across the country bringing irregular heavy rain.
The cool season (which coincides with the winter months of the Northern Hemisphere), between November and February, is considerably drier, although the temperatures lie only marginally below the annual average. Nonetheless, at higher altitudes in the north of the country, the temperature can suddenly drop almost to freezing point. During this period, although night-time temperatures in Bangkok can also fall to 22 C (61 F), the south remains pleasantly warm. The hot season, from March until May, is charecterised by high temperatures and humidity, but with an absence of rain. The eastern side of the peninsula represents a distinct microclimate where the rainfall is more or less evenly distributed throughout the year, with increased precipitation falling only during September.
The cool season is the best season to visit Thailand. The irregularity of the rainfall means that the rainy season is also pleasant as long as one avoids gxtended walks in the countryside. The high temperatures and humidity of the hot season are trying even for the Thais themselves; during these months the only region which Europeans find tolerable is the south coast.
On the islands of Phuket and Koh Phi Phi most of the rain falls in may/June and September/October. In Koh Samui the wettest months are October/November.
Economy
At the end of the 1970s, Thailand entered a new phase of economic expansion which will continue the end of the 20th century. By then, this newly industrialized country is expected to join the exclusive ranks of the socalled 'Little Dragons', a title given to countries like Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and Singapore which, alongside superpowers China and Japan have to fire the powerful Asian boom which determines much of the world economy today.
Tourism is the principal money earner, followed by agricultural produce and manufactured goods. Following massive advertising campaigns, became Thailand's most important source of foreign exchange earnings at the end of the 1980s, with the fastest growing market from neighbouring Asian countries like Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan.More than half the population is still involved in agriculture. The main crops, especially rice, tapioca, rubber and coconuts, are amongst the principals. Expanding steadily are the earnings from the manufacture of goods like textiles, electronics and cut gem stones.
Thailand's broad range of achievements is supported by a good infrastructure, modern educational institutions, an educated and younger-than-average population, a low inflation rate, and emphasis on an export-oriented economic policy. These excellent conditions attract large numbers of foreign investors, most notably the Japanese, to Thailand.
